After suffering a tough road loss to Juan Diego 42-64 on Wednesday, Jan. 25, the Trojan boys basketball team was looking for a win against the Logan Grizzlies at home on Friday, Jan. 27. Unfortunately Morgan wasn’t able to keep its early lead and Logan got the 54-62 win.
Morgan came out strong to take an 11-7 first-quarter lead. The team looked strong as they applied defensive pressure to the Grizzlies and hit a large majority of their shots. In the second period at the 5:43 mark, Logan took a 13-14 lead, but a three-ball by Tucker Skinner returned the lead to Morgan 16-14. Morgan came within one at 18-19 on a high floater by Josh Streadbeck, but was unable to regain the lead before the half, entering the locker room down 20-25.
Skinner opened the second half with a steal and a basket to narrow the gap to 22-25 early, but three minutes into the third period the Trojans were down 23-30. Streadbeck hit a shot off the glass and Trey Miles did a turn-around jumper to get back within five at 27-32. But then Logan went on a run to take a 27-39 lead before a Morgan timeout was called at the three-minute mark in the quarter. The Trojans fought through the end of the third period and ended down 34-47.
Trevor Rose opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer followed by another three from Streadbeck to bring Morgan within seven at 40-47. A Tyler Moake layup off a great assist from Cade Russell brought the Trojans within five, 42-47 with 4:32 remaining in the game. Once again Logan lengthened the lead to nine before Morgan pulled it back to four on another Streadbeck three at 50-54. The Trojans continued to fight, but were unable to get any closer than four (52-56 with a minute remaining) before they had to start fouling Logan to get the ball back. Logan went 5-6 on their final foul shots to get the eight-point victory.
