The Morgan Chamber of Commerce had a very successful year. A lot of hard work and long hours have been put in when chamber members stepped up to the place and took over both the Morgan City 4th of July celebration and a large portion of Morgan City’s Hometown Christmas. The addition of the Cardboard Boat Regatta and the Morgan Festival of Trees really helped bring a spirit of community to Morgan.
In an attempt to bring that same community unity into the New Year, their 2018 kick-off event will be held on Jan. 9, starting off with a business expo and ending with internationally recognized speaker Chad Hymas. The Wall Street Journal called Hymas “one of the 10 most inspirational people in the world.”
Hymas was one of the youngest orators ever to receive the Council of Peers Award for Excellence (CPAE) and to be inducted into the prestigious National Speaker Hall of Fame.
In 2001, at the age of 27, Hymas experienced a life changing event. A 2,000-pound bale of hay shattered his neck, leaving him a quadriplegic, changing his world in an instant. But his dreams were not paralyzed that day. Instead he became an example of what is possible with hard work and a positive attitude in the face of adversity.
According to his website, Hymas is a best-selling author and president of his own communications company, and recognized world-class wheelchair athlete. In 2003, Chad set a world record by wheeling his chair from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas (513 miles).
As a member of the National Speakers Association, Hymas travels as many as 300,000 miles a year, captivating and entertaining audiences around the world. He has graced the stage of hundreds of professional and civic organizations.
Tickets will be $5 at the door, or you can participate in contests driven by local businesses to earn free tickets.
The business expo will begin at 5 p.m. and will end just before Hymas takes the stage at 7 p.m. If you think you know all about every business in Morgan because you drive the streets every day, or because you have lived in this town all of your life, you may be in for a big surprise.
Residents are invited to learn more about each business by showing up early to visit each booth. As an incentive to bring people out in support of local business, guests will be given a raffle ticket at every booth they visit.
The more you educate yourself about the services and local talent in Morgan, the more chances you will have to win prizes. There will be more than $500 in prizes to give away that night, so show up early to increase your odds.
The event will wrap up at 8 p.m. and will conclude with a prize drawing. The Chamber would like as many members of the community as possible to benefit from the wisdom and heart of Hymas, so you must be present to win.
