MHS wrestling team claims region title

For the first time in seven years, the Morgan High School wrestling team claimed the Region 13 title, and they did so with an undefeated region record!  Wednesday’s final region match against South Summit was the deciding dual for the title, and the Trojans came out on top 45-35.

Morgan opened the match at 132 lbs and went down 0-18 early with South Summit getting three pins at 132, 138 and 145.  The Trojan senior trio of Antonio Nava (152 lbs), Chase Peterson (160 lbs) and Hayden Stuart (170 lbs) each pinned their opponents to even the score at 18-18.  A loss at 182 lbs and a forfeit at 195 lbs put the Trojans down 18-30 with six matches to go.

At 220 lbs, senior Chase Trussell won his match by fall to bring Morgan within six 24-30 before South Summit got a tech fall in the 285lbs bout and extended their lead to 24-35.

Tension was in the air as the lighter weights took the mat.  Freshman Waylen Pentz earned the forfeit for Morgan at 106lbs bringing the Trojans within five, 30-35, and sophomore Joseph Mecham pinned his 113-pound opponent after a rough first period to give the Trojans a one-point lead 36-35 with only two matches to go.

Fellow sophomore Jarrett Jorgenson (120 lbs) won his match by fall to put Morgan up 42-35 before senior Chris Payne (126 lbs) extended the margin of victory to 10 points with a 4-2 decision in the final match of the night.

Congratulations to the Trojan grapplers on their region victory and best of luck to them as they travel to Richfield Feb. 2-3 for divisionals and to Orem Feb. 9-10 for the 3A State Championships.

JV Results against South Summit

Four of Morgan’s JV wrestlers—Tom Howard, Chance Toone, Montana Cragun and Isaac Rees—all pinned their Wildcat opponents while Tanner Belinski won by major decision 13-4.  Unfortunately, Tyler Chase was not able to pull out the win on his 15th birthday and lost by fall.  Great job JV wrestlers!
