For the second year in a row, the Morgan High School cheerleaders are 3A state champions.
On Saturday at Salt Lake Community College, the MHS cheer team competed in the 2018 Utah Cheer Club state competition and the Trojans took home top honors once again.
Although not a UHSAA-sanctioned sport, cheerleading is one of the most time-consuming and physically demanding sports in high school. In addition to providing school spirit at dozens of sporting events and other activities, the cheerleaders have been perfecting a cheer routine for competition. And this has been going on since last summer.
The Trojans performed in the most competitive category in the competition: Varsity All Girl Show Cheer. Their final point total was better than second-place Richfield and third-place North Sanpete.
The state title is the second for head coach Sue Ann Kelsey.
In addition to the team award, three Morgan cheerleaders received individual accolades. Natalie Crowther and Emma Johnson were named to the Academic All State team, while Hannah Jones took third place in the 3A jump-off, a short series of jumps that demonstrate one’s strength, flexibility and technique.
