Michal Gibson, daughter of Keith and Jacelin Gibson, said she loves debate because “I am very interested in current events and discussing big issues. I like to be updated and I like talking to others about it. I also like the rush of performing and speaking.” The Morgan High School Sterling Scholar of Speech/Drama/Forensics, Gibson has participated in debate for five years and excelled in many different aspects of high school.
Gibson has constantly been involved in clubs, teams, and activities at the high school, including choir, the mountain bike team, the swim team, and the National Honor Society. She also loves running, hiking, and spending time with her family. She is amazing at playing the piano! When asked about some of her hobbies and interests, Gibson responded, “Mainly piano. I am very interested in horses and astronomy. Also, I love biology! I love watching movies and going on walks with friends.” Gibson is fully capable of balancing all of her many interests and pursuits.
When it comes to debate, Gibson seems to have done it all. Numerous school tournaments, region and state competitions, and a plethora of debate categories exemplify her love for what she does. She has also sat in on the Utah House of Representatives and met Mitt Romney. This year, she is the Debate President. A law degree is in her future.
Gibson’s favorite quote is, “If at first you don’t succeed, try at least two more times so your failure is statistically significant.” Gibson’s sense of humor and ability to see the good in others also make her a great friend to all. This and her excellence in debate, leadership, academics, and service fully qualify her to be a Sterling Scholar for Morgan High School.
