Morgan, UT – A chilly breeze, sunny sky, and snowy mountains were the setting for a great win for Morgan varsity softball on Tuesday afternoon. In their first region game of the season, Morgan took a 12-1 victory in six innings over the Judge Memorial Bulldogs. The fifth inning blew things wide open as the Trojans scored seven runs behind big hitting and aggressive play. They closed the game out with two more runs in the sixth and the umpire ended the game a frame early.
Judge, first at bat, had three up and three outs quickly. Morgan pitcher Karly Peterson dominated all game giving up only the single run, recording 10 strike outs, and allowing Judge on base far and few in between. The Trojans took two runs in the first off of a couple RBIs and had another in the second inning to put them up 3-0 over the Bulldogs.
Judge took their only run in the third off of an RBI, the rest of the inning and the fourth were fairly quiet. The Bulldogs had three up and three down again to start the fifth and then the Trojans took the plate and it all came together.
Brook Loertscher was up first and singled, after a wild pitch she stole second and was batted in by Karly Peterson’s double, scoring the first of seven runs for the fifth inning. Not to be out done, Peterson stole third and then on a wild pitch stole home for Morgan’s fifth run. Megan Durrant, up next, walked and Kassidy Mikesell doubled with a fly to left field, discovering that left field held a great weakness for the Judge defense.
Jasmine Spens then doubled to left field batting in another run setting up MacKenzie Logsdon for the play of the game. After a tease at a bunt and a few balls Logsdon blasted a fly ball to deep center left for a three run home run and the nail in the coffin for Judge. Morgan recorded one more run to end the inning up 10-1.
In the sixth, Kimberly Birt doubled, batting in two more runners bringing the final score to 12-1 as the umpire called the game.
Coach Billy Peterson was excited and impressed with his team after the game, “they all came together, took them a while to get used to [their] pitching — we had that nice home run by Mackenzie, that kind of jump started us, everybody got excited. — we brought some girls off the bench and they contributed too. — good team win, Karley pitched a great game, kept them off the bases for the most part.”
Over all solid win for the Morgan High Trojans (6-3), up next they will continue region play on Friday at home against Summit Academy at 3:30pm. The Judge Bulldogs (4-6) will be taking on South Summit for their next contest.
