Salt Lake City, UT – On Tuesday afternoon Morgan traveled to take on region rival Judge Memorial. With a very back and forth game it looked to be a close one, but the Bulldogs seemed to have an answer for everything that Morgan threw at them. Judge took a 4-3 victory over Morgan securing the win in the final minutes of the match.
At the start of the game it seemed like everything was going the Trojans way. They had solid control and great ball movement. This paid off for Morgan as they scored first, in the 24th minute Carson Flitton controlled a pass from the outside and scored on a crossing shot just out of reach from Judge’s goalie. The celebration was a little short lived, as Judge seemingly woke up and started playing their game, suddenly overwhelming Morgan’s defense.
Judge scored only four minutes later at the 20th minute coming in close and sneaking a corner shot by Morgan’s Trek Loveridge to even the score. Loveridge showed a lot of toughness saving three more goals in the remaining first half. But, in the stoppage time of the first half Judge found the net again, putting them up 2-1 going into half time.
To start the second half, Morgan was back to playing their brand of ball and things started getting physical. At the 37th minute Judge was whistled for yellow card setting up the play for Morgan’s next goal. After a high kick and some back and forth positioning, Inigo Polo Lopez received a high pass as he ran into center and chipped the ball into the back of the net.
The Bulldogs followed up with another near miss on a goal the following minute and the physical play continued. After a Morgan and Judge player both left the game due to injury things calmed down a little, but certainly not the Bulldogs offense. In the seventh minute Judge scored again with a barrage of attacks. Loveridge made two saves, deflecting them both, only to have a high kick come down and get headed in for the score.
In the following minute Judge, riding high, got out in front of Morgan’s defense and scored with the ball into the right corner putting them up 4-2 with few minutes left in regulation. Morgan did not give up and kept on fighting. In stoppage time, Polo Lopez scored his second goal of the game off a massive throw in from the side line heading the ball just past the Judge goalie for the final score of the game.
It was a disappointing loss of a very physical and emotional game. Coach Jared Anderson reflected on what they could have done a little better, ”[we had] small lapses in defense, if we would have stayed on our feet, played defense like we needed to, I think we should have beat them. But, thats ok. They’re a good team. Nothing to take away from them. They’re a great team.”
Morgan (5-6-1) will be back on the field with another road game on Friday 13th at 3:30pm. Judge (7-3) will also be taking on South Summit on Friday at home.
