On April 10th 2018, The Utah Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame honored local athlete Dillon Petty with the prestigious 2017-18 Scholar-Leader-Athlete Award. Nominees were submitted from 1A-6A High Schools across the State. Petty was one of 12 recipients to receive this distinguished honor.
The UCCU Center at UVU was filled with Utah Football legends old and young. From KUTV Sports Anchor Dave Fox as Master of Ceremonies, to guest speaker BYU Alumni and Kansas City Chiefs Safety Danny Sorensen.
Each honored athlete was fitted with a tuxedo and had their exemplary accomplishments read off while their football highlight video played. They were each awarded with a $2,000 scholarship to the college of their choice, as well as a beautiful ring by Jostens, a handsome crystal trophy, and a banner to be displayed in their school. Furthermore, their names will be permanently enshrined in the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Scholar-Leader-Athlete Award is based on 40% Scholarship, 40% Athletics and 20% Leadership. Petty is the first athlete from Morgan High School to receive this award since its inception 24 years ago.
Petty’s resume is quite extensive. A few of his football accomplishments include: 1st Team All-State Deseret News Offensive Line, 2nd Team All State Deseret News Punter, 1st Team All State Salt Lake Tribune OL and Punter, 3A North 1st Team All Region OL and Punter, Utah Football Foundation Junior Award Winner, and 41 punts averaging 42.37 yds/punt …….Some of Petty’s Scholastic Honors included: 4.0 cumulative GPA, 31 ACT Score, Science Sterling Scholar and Science Sterling Scholar Region Winner, Rigor of Honors and AP Classes ……. Petty’s Leadership experiences include: National Honor Society President, Hope Squad Co-President, Morgan County School Board Student Representative, Morgan FFA Chapter President and Seminary Council……
Shortly after Petty’s graduation this May, he will be serving a 2 year LDS Mission in Chile, Santiago West. Upon his return, he will attend Southern Utah University on a Presidential Scholarship while continuing his athletics as a member of both the SUU Track and Field Throwing Team and the SUU Football Team.
