The girls golf 3A state championship tournament took place this year at the Cove View golf course in Richfield on Tuesday. After the hard fought first round was through the Lady Trojans found themselves breathing easy in third place as only the top eight teams advanced to the finals on Wednesday. All of the drama and excitement of the first day was nothing compared to the what the final had in store for Region Champs Morgan High.
With birds chirping, a light breeze, and sunshine all around the final started. As the round came to a close it became clear that Richfield would take the day securing first place with a score of 668, but that fact became a background note as Morgan and Judge Memorial were in a tie for second place with a score of 739. A sudden death round was declared with the top four performers on each team to play for second place.
For Morgan, Averi Vaughn (who shot a 90 in the final round), Taysia Crowther (96), Bailee Wright (91), and Lauren Telford (89) were in the sudden death. With tensions high, the teams took to the 10th hole and the battle was on. With efficiency and poise Morgan’s final four took the hole, not even giving Judge a chance to finish and second place was theirs. The thrill and excitement was overwhelming.
Averi Vaughn had a team high score of 174 for the tournament, Bailee Wright came next with a score of 182, Lauren Telford (183), Taysia Crowther (204), Ashlyn Morrell (212), Tacey Durrant (218), and Taylor Condie played as an individual scoring 108, but did not advance to the final round.
After a long season of hard work and determination the Morgan High Lady Trojan golf team takes Region and second place in the 3A State Championships. Great job ladies, what an incredible season!
