Wednesday night two buddy benches were erected on the playground at Morgan Elementary school. The project was instigated by two elementary school students and later approved by the administration. A group of elementary students were asked to participate in the event, working together to create a place where students who are lonely can sit during recess.
A buddy bench is a place where a child who feels lonely can go and sit. When a child sits on the bench, it sends a signal to other students that there is someone in need of friend. The other students can then extend the invitation for the buddy on the bench to come and play.
The benches are created with the spirit of inclusion. The group of students gathered on Wednesday evening to paint and set up the benches. The two students who brought the idea forward to Principal Jensen and the faculty had read of the idea in a magazine and wanted to do the same thing for the schools in the community.
Tiffany Ellis said, “The buddy bench is not a new idea, it’s been used in other parts of the country, but it’s meant to be a place where kids who are lonely can be invited to go play.”
The new buddy benches will wrap up the end of the school year, and will be ready for use for the 2018-2019 school year. A great solution to a problem many kids deal with silently. Way to go, Morgan Elementary.
